World-renowned circus instructors and the local group of youth performers invite Big Island keiki ages 7 and up to join the fun and learn juggling, stilt-walking, clowning, unicycyling, acrobatics, aerial dance and more at the Seaview Performing Arts Center for Education in Kalapana.
Hiccup Circus is the Hawaii’s Volcano Circus’ innovative education program and S.P.A.C.E. is its home, specifically designed for training in the circus arts with specialized training equipment and a host of successful instructors.
Since 1984, the award-winning “Hiccups” have been a regular feature at Big Island festivals and parades, performing for community events and benefits extending across the Hawaiian Islands to the west coast of the United States. Many youth performers from the Hiccup Circus have moved on to join world renowned performance groups, such as Cirque de Soleil, in their adult lives and created successful careers in the performing arts.
“But most importantly, it’s a bucket load of fun,” said spokeswoman Jenna Way.
There are two camps: one for beginners (June 10-14) and one for advanced performers (June 17-21). Each student receives individual attention catered to individual skill levels from Hawaii’s Volcano Circus instructors, Terminal Circus instructors and their experienced Hiccup assistants. Each five-day camp runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Tuition is $250, with some partial scholarships available.
